DavisGarcia: Result & Scorecard

Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis silenced the lightweight division last night as he dropped Ryan Garcia in the 2nd round and again in the 7th forcing Garcia to take a knee a stay down for the full 10 count.

Many people were split on how this one was going to play out as Tank fans believed that Garcia couldn’t handle his power. With Garcia fans believing Tank couldn’t handle Garcia’s speed. Ryan certainly showed his lightning speed in the first rounds and came out in the second round putting pressure on Gervonta with his speed. It seemed that Tank was under pressure from the hand speed of Ryan but it still didn’t stop him from landing that overhand left, flooring Garcia. Many critics mentioned Ryan’s tendency to leave his chin hanging in the air when throwing punches, as was also found out against Luke Campbell, when he also dropped Garcia.

To many, they believed that Garcia was winning the 2nd round but others argued that Tank won it due to the knockdown. This caused controversy on Twitter with Dave Moretti scoring it a 10-10 round and the other 2 scoring it a 10-9. Boxing fans on Twitter were confused as many of them scored it 10-8 for Tank.

As the fight continued, both fighters were very cautious of each others skills, with Tank respecting Garcia’s speed, and Garcia respecting the power of Tank. Because both fighters tend to work better on their counter punching, there were not many shots thrown as they both wanted to counter.

Eventually, heading into the 7th round, both fighters were throwing at a higher rate, with Garcia having the more urgency due to the knockdown. This is what may have led to the opportunity for Tank to throw a beautiful left hand, straight to the liver. The pain seemed to have a delayed reaction to Garcia as it took him a couple of seconds before he took a knee, as Thomas Taylor started the count, many, even Tank, thought Garcia was going to rise up again but he choose to keep the knee as the referee reached the count of 10.

An amazing fight from both fighters. While Gervonta Davis may be considered the face of boxing by many now. Ryan Garcia should also hold his head high for taking the fight and giving the fans what we want to see; the best vs the best.
