Mauricio Lara: Winner by TKO (Towel Thrown In)
Tonight Leigh Wood took one of his biggest challenges facing against Mexico’s Mauricio Lara. Lara, previously had come to the UK to face Josh Warrington twice, winning the first bout by TKO in the 9th and then scoring a draw in the 2nd fight due to a cut from a clash of heads which was halted in round 2.
No doubt this was set to be a war and it did not disappoint. Many expected Lara to take control of the fight, but Wood surprisingly was the one in control. The fight started out slowly in the first round, with not many punches thrown. Two of the judges gave the first round to Lara which was shocking as it seemed Wood landed the more effective punches from the little punches thrown.
The 2nd round brought Lara to life, which was likely due to seeing Wood with a cut above the left eye. Wood looked like the bigger punched but ultimately Lara finished the round strongly.
Wood then stepped up and was in control of the fight up until the 7th round as Lara slipped a punch and threw a left hook, dropped Wood hard in the center of the ring.
